Semi air suspension systems make it possible for the lorry and bus ride height to be kept level. They greatly increase stability, in particular during high-speed motorway travel - in a straight-line, when buffeted by strong sideways winds and whilst being overtaken by huge vehicles. At lower speeds they significantly degrade body roll on round abouts and when cornering.
A rear suspension fitted with a semi air suspension arrangement can be stiffened easily by increasing the air pressure in the bellows. This alleviates any sagging of the rear suspension due to imbalanced or extreme loading.
Many people fit semi air suspension units to restore the rear driving height of a motorhome to its initial consistant. Unlike mini busses, motorhomes are generally fully loaded. The is expressly true if spare rear frames are fitted to hold bikes etc. As a result of constant full loading, steel springs usually to sag after a while. Semi air suspension units effectively counter this tendency.
